Hello Community Members,

ASF Infra has announced that contributors will no longer be able to sign up for a JIRA account from 6th November 2022 onward. This is due to the amount of spam issues and users being created in JIRA, causing a lot of overhead for the infra team.

From the 6th of November, contributors who wish to have a JIRA account (to create, assign, watch, etc issues) will need to request an account through an ASF PMC. Note that if you already have a JIRA account, or if you requested an account from the PMC of a different ASF project after the 6th of November, you can use that account to open, watch, comment, etc on issues from other projects, in other words, you only need to request an account once from a PMC to access JIRA for all ASF projects.

The Calcite PMC has had some discussion over the last few days to design a process for requesting a JIRA account through the Calcite project. We are currently proposing the following process for Calcite:

1. Contributors who wish to have a JIRA account should email a dedicated private mailing list (for example, [email protected]) with the following:
-- Proposed JIRA username [a-z0-9] only
-- Full display name
-- Email address
-- Reasons why you are requesting an account

This list is private and will not be accessible via any public archives on the internet.

Once a PMC member looks at the request, they will request the account to be created via ASF's system. In the event that the chosen username is not available, they will get back to the requestor and ask for an alternative username.

2. We will document the process in simple and clear steps on our website. This page will be linked prominently in the README.md files of our 3 code repositories: calcite, calcite-avatica and calcite-avatica-go.

Please let us know what you think!

Francis
