I understand the idea is to develop an add-in for OpenOffice.org and as I
have said, "Great idea!"

Some people have projects that have to be done right now, and I thought I
would share some things that are available now. One of the projects, uDig
ais written in Java and may have code that would be useful for a OpenOffice
add-in. Geoda is not fully open source and there is a new OpenGeoda project
starting.

If you still have a copy of MS Office 97 lying around, it has an add-in for
MapInfo.

*What you need*

   -

Excel Version 7.0 or 8.0 (Office 95 or Office 97)
   -

Your map layers, in MapInfo format
   -

   XLS worksheet data to map.

  *Step-by-Step*

   -

Be sure the MS Map feature of Excel is installed. [It is optional]
   -

Add your MapInfo map layers to the Excel map catalog using the setup
program included with Excel. [Look for the program in "\Program Files\Common
   Files\Microsoft Shared\Datamap\..]
   -

Start Excel. Use Excel "File > Open" to display the worksheet
   containing values to be mapped.
   -

Highlight the columns of values; pick the Map icon (globe); then draw
the map area on the worksheet.

There are also Wikipedia articles for CDC's EPI Info and US Census CSPro.

WikiPedia CDC EPI Info

WikiPedia US Census CSPro

The Wikipedia articles provide good overviews that the websites sometimes
explain in a more roundabout format

A more statistically oriented, geographic exploratory data analysis is
provided by GeoDA from the University of Illinois campus in
Urbana/Champaign (same University campus that developed ancestor of the
Firefox web browser).

I repeat, I am not saying a GIS add-in is not needed in OpenOffice.org, I
just wanted to provide some idea of the state of the art for thematic
oriented GIS (as opposed to full-blown GRASS).
