I don’t think that’s the whole story. Taking gender as an example. While the 
industry does have an issue, less than 5% of people who make contributions to 
the ASF are female, that’s significantly below the industry rate of 20-30%. Why 
exactly is it that way I don’t know, but I can make a few good guesses. As a 
comparison, of the 500+ adult students I teach programming to about 35% are 
female.
