Fixing it in accord with Frank's recommended approach will be easy. It's
just a matter of moving a few pages around.
After which I will need to amend some of the x-refs within the pages. Is
there a way to find-and-replace text when editing a wiki page?

It depends on the browser that you are using. I find that Firefox allows me
to search just find. But it insists on making me do the replacing. I think
I'm getting all the links that refer to pages on the wiki. But if I miss
any, the existing one will probably still work.
What I'm doing is moving pages to the new locations, and the wiki software
normal creates a "redirect" for anything that still refers to the old
location. Sort of like a forwarding address.
