Even if Chart will not be a standalone component in OOo 3.0 it could
be modified in the following releases, if I understand this right.
As the icons we're going to create should stay at least until the last
release before OOo4 we'll have to think about sparing a color range
not to be used for other components.
In the moment it could be dark green or purple - we're just at the
beginning of the color discussion on [EMAIL PROTECTED]
There exists already an icon for chart document that uses dark green [1]
as color. I think the color is ok. Maybe we should use a pie chart
instead of the columns, as this makes the purpose of the icon clearer.
However, this icon is indeed not used today, and I am not sure if there
are any plans to change this. Charts are currently only available as OLE
objects, but one basic property of OLE objects is to have an own
file-format as it is required to be storable on their own (as
temp-files). There is usually also a menu entry "Save Copy As ..." for
storing an OLE-object as a separate file. This is currently not
available for charts, but I see no reason for not being able to do so.
(Except the reason that, when having those files, you should be able to
open and also modify them, which currently also doesn't work satisfactory)
I would have thought save as svg would be the most logical or save as
OOo Draw.
No. A chart has its own logical structure that is far different from
being just a collection of graphics. In a similar way you can think of
saving a html text as bitmap.
Since a chart can be cut and pasted into Draw and then broken
into individual components it can't be too hard to save directly in Draw
format?
Again. Than the chart logic will be lost completely. Changes in data
will not be reflected anymore. The several objects will not be
positioned and resized in a logic context. You will not be able to
change axis scales or chart types, nor add errorbars or trendlines etc
etc ... .
Of course since it is easy to cut and paste to Draw then save to
a Draw file, how vital is it to be able to save directly to a Draw file?
I would rather see the effort put into svg support to improve
interoperability with other applications that support svg.
What would be interesting I think is to have an export from chart to
draw shapes. Then all features available for draw shapes can be used
further on that exported shapes. Thus when the draw/impress team has
implemented a svg export, you can use it also for charts.
