What would be interesting I think is to have an export from chart to draw shapes. Then all features available for draw shapes can be used further on that exported shapes.
This was possible under RISC OS for just about any application that
produced a chart, diagram or graphic that could be reasonably
represented in vector format. It was very useful, I could even save a
spreadsheet including text and numbers as a vector file. Ok I then lost
formulae and text editing but in a cooperative multi-tasking environment
that was rarely much of a problem. In some circumstances being able to
rotate and scale the graphic of a spreadsheet table in a desktop
publisher was very much more versatile when presenting work. Having a
standardised vector format across applications is a big advantage that
you really miss when its taken away.
You are right that an export of chart into different formats would be nice (imagine an export of 3d charts into PovRay format ;-) ), and we should consider this at some time. But that misses the point of the original discussion here. The question was basically if we want an own MIME-type, extension, and the ability to edit a chart in a separate application.

This was possible in StarOffice 5.2, and in later version was still possible in a very restricted way, which rendered this feature useless. So, the question right now is, if we want to have a standalone chart back or not.

I think it is indeed strange to have an own Math application but no Chart. I would at least prefer having both or none of them as application. Personally, I think having both only as OLE objects is sufficient, but a well-defined own file format, so that you can save your charts and insert them from a file into a different document would be handy and we should consider this.

At least we should have an icon for the Chart, that should also appear on the OOo main page [1]! Because it is an essential part of OOo and not less important than Math.
