Hi Ingrid,
3D charts (also 3D pies) was an existing feature in the old chart already.
Indeed, I was unaware that OOo 2.03 had 3D effects (I never scrolled
down in the chart-type list as all the charts that are necessary are
displayed in the first 2 rows; the 3D charts were displayed in the lower
rows; and I was a user since StarOffice 7). Still, I believe that too
much effort is put into this 3D stuff. There are much more important
things to do.
Hm, I tend to assume that a user should be able to decide himself
whether a 3D pie is appropriate for his data or not,
It happens that I also teach statistics at the department of Biomedical
Informatics, University in Timisoara, Romania, and believe me, most
users do NOT know even the basics of statistics and of data
presentation. Yes, for most novices 3D looks weird and many would like
to use it, but it is this lack of deeper knowledge that makes them use it.
What should be the priorities?
====================
Some excellent features that should have high priority are described in
the "List of wished enhancements for Charts" (e.g. points 6a, 6b, 6c,
6d, 6e and many more). Venn-diagrams would also belong to point 6 (but
are NOT described) and are quite fundamental for overlapping data (see
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Statistical_Data_Analysis_Tool
and wikipedia; the wiki page was mostly written by me). There are
various other very-specific graphic-types that are very useful for a
subset of users, but then they will be used only by that subset. (So
probably less priority.)
See Issue 64695: Pie chart with a second pie chart and Issue 64694:
Pie chart with a second bar chart
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=64694
These issues are indeed a workaround for that situation. [but a useful
one! Actually, this is a severe limitation of pie-charts in general, and
there is need for some brainstorming to develop a better alternative.
One such replacement could be represented by 'Dot charts' (see
Feinstein), but the discussion is surely still open.]
Would you rate this higher than Regression Curve parameter display for
example?
I cannot really rate this. I simply do NOT use regression analysis in
Calc. Unfortunately, for medical data analysis I need multivariate
liniar regression, non-linear regression and *time-series* (Kaplan-Meyer
and Cox-proportional hazards), which are not available in OOo. Instead,
I use "R" (see the previous wiki-page, paragraph for R-integration).
IMPORTANT
==========
I believe that some of the more complex chart-types should be
implemented through external programs, when such free alternatives
exist. See my comment for issue
http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=366 and the statistics
wiki page. Indeed, gnuplot and R (with the various graphic-packages)
spring here to mind.
However, my post was NOT about describing new issues, BUT about setting
priorities: what should go first, and 3D just did not seem to be a big
priority (everything else, just not this one). I also want to stress,
that there might be a greater need to synchronize the various efforts:
it seems that there is a need for better synchronization between the
chart dev team and the stat wiki page.
Nevertheless, I appreciate your great work on the Chart application and
I am looking forward to see all these issues implemented. Let me
congratulate for this excellent software and please forgive me for my
sometimes very harsh writing.
Sincerely,
Leonard
