Question, how hackable is the gallery module at the  moment. I know is
not treated as any other windows or pane and also is not accessible by
the scripting framework.

So improving it through an extension seems like a pretty hard task at
the moment. Search, tagging or just replacing the gallery should be
achieved through extensions if it were that powerful.
