Also, it might be worth it to try raghu or mangal for hi_IN, since those seem 
to be better engineered (both I believe are designed by RK Joshi, an 
acclaimed Indian typographer and theorist). I am sure that many shaping 
engines (like pango or yudit's shaping engine) workaround many buggy fonts. I 
am not sure of the same in ICU, even though pango is derived from ICU.

In any case, for my problem (which btw was not a Malayalam rendering issue, 
rather it was a Latin rendering issue), I am using the precomposed Latin 
codepoints and for the 2 sequences that were not available in precomposed 
form, I have used PUA codepoints.
