Hi Jan!
I'm one of the QA responsibles (usually Writer tester) thought for
testing the CWS and approving the spec and I have personaly some
concerns about this CWS. I'm both user (from knowledge and use of OOo)
and developper (concerning timline and ressources) orientated.
First, let me tell you that this feature is a great one! I also like the
Industrial theme (though I have some critics on it. Se below) and the
idea to switch my icon-set on the fly.
But I have great doubts about the overall quality of the CWS as it is
right now.
Core stuff:
- where is the "setup" file? Should I install as Userland? Well I did,
with a script but this is not supported by now...
- I installed the CWS on JDS (+ gnome) and, when starting, it tells me
"no suitable windowing system found, exiting." and it does it. Meaning
this CWS doesn't run on JDS (let's see - maybe off list - what's the
problem)
- High Contrast (Accessibility = A11y): it happens that I am also
responsible (coordination) for the A11y-QA of OOo. Not to say that I am
a great man ;) but just to say that I may be aware about special features...
I actually have a peoblem with that, that the concept includes a special
theme for High Contrast.
"Normally" the system (Windows, Gnome) decides if it's normal or high
contrast. So there's a switch in the system (at least on Windows)
telling *all* softwares they have to switch to High Contrast (=HC).
HC is not switched individually for each software (even with icon
options) but central, from the system' settings.
So I think, including a single HighContrast theme is off topic.
*Every* themes should be also HC compliant.
Solution:
- add for each <mytheme>.zip file a hc_<mytheme>.zip file or whatever
named... it would allow not to load HC icons at start when not needed
(As you said) and to keep the same Look&Feel whatever theme you'd like
to have.
Icons stuff:
- Available Themes: they are not all complete (not all icons available)
- Industrial Theme: It's *definitively* not a question of taste (I like
that theme a lot!) but there are still some icons that are not really
readable (A11y again)... AAA, AAA (Bold, Italic, Underlines,
Font/Character/Paragraph background) for instance...
The Spec:
- General : a lot of areas don't fit with spec requirements (we can
discuss it off list). The Spec cannot be final while all people didn't
say "approved". And nobody from the written people said it untill now... ;)
- Especially for an UI Spec I espect screen shots. I see none.
Why is a spec important for a new feature?
- because it defines what the program does *and does not*!
- because it is a reference for people who want to know "why".
From this point of view,
I don't see the spec as "ok" right now
Let's work on it!
Ciao
Éric

Hi,
In short: it would be great to have the CWS iconswitching1 integrated ;-)
