thanks for the information and the updated standalone hyphenator.
I’m glad that I found some Python bindings for it, made by Danny Yoo:

The pyHnj module is pretty old (2000) but still works. It would be nice
if it worked more seamlessly with Python Unicode strings, currently one
needs to encode and decode the text explicitly in Python into the
encodings the prefix file uses.
Anyhow, thanks a lot! Very useful stuff.

Ps. The hyphen doubling in situations like "kung-fu" in Polish is an
orthographic requirement, not just a typographic tradition.
