That is more like the things I remember.

>From my point of view I was eager to have that extension mechanism
available in OOo 3.0 Beta to give dictionary providers a environment to
check if their converted dictionaries will work fine and hopefully, if
users start to download those extensions when they become available, to
find any possible still hidden issue in the implementation.
And last but not least to have enough time to convert all dictionaries
in use to extensions. For the latter Laurent was so kind to offer his help.

However Martin liked to already ship the OOo Beta with those extensions
if possible. Which is understandable as well.
But that did not work out as he wished for.

As far as I know for the OOo 3.0 the localized installation should come
along with about 4 dictionary languages. And the specific language for
the installation should be one of them.
You just won't get all dictionaries by default anymore. Which was
probably to no use for anyone.

Thus to give a scenario it should be something like this:
If you download a French localized version of OOo 3.0 you should get
French, English, German and maybe Italian or Spanish as dictionaries
installed by default. But not the 20+ other ones you most likely will
never use as a native French speaker.

Whatever mechanism is used to download new dictionaries, if that will
still be DictOOo or if something else is planned, I do not yet know of.

It would be cool to have a tool that when you do spell check and a
language was found not being installed, that tool could look up in the
repository and check if it can be downloaded and do so if possible. And
then just continue with spell checking. But that may be wishful
thinking. At least I do not expect to see something like this for OOo 3.0.
