I've just done something very similar and have done it the way you
suggest. You can set up the datasource first though, no need to do it on
the fly.
Put a copy of the spreadsheet in the location where you will get the
user to upload it to (nice english dom). Then make a datasource out of it.
In the user's backend system, they upload the new spreadsheet and
overwrite the old one and you can still access it with the same DSN.

I have a requirement where the client stores lots of financial data on
a spreadsheet.
I want to be able to use this spreadsheet as a datasource.
Here are the concearns. The spreadsheet changes quaterly. Sometimes in
its physical structure i.e. column names won't be the same. The client
wants to have an easy mechanism to upload the spreadsheet and the
application does the rest.
So.....
I was thinking that the client could upload the spreadsheet via a
backend system. CF would then need to create an on the fly datasource
to this spreadsheet and be able to read all of the column headings etc
..... I have no idea how to even start this one....?
Can this even be done?
Can anyone point me in the direction of some reading around this ...?
