Great, got it. my key wqas in ssh.com format, so opened it, and exported it 
into openssh format, and that fixed it. Thanks for your help Michael.

Somebody else had the same issue using the same client, but I did not here 
if he manged to resolve it somehow. 
  Are you able to use either openssh or putty to generate or convert keys? 
  Both are open source.  putty can be downloaded here
