it would be the firewall that is receiving the message. Find out what that
firewall is to confirm that it does this.

sounds like the Firewall is doing this for very obvious security reasons.

We have an application on the site that allows Police officers in the Met
to
send out emails to the public.

An officer tried to send an email out last night with a word doc attachment
but the mail has been distributed to everybody and has arrived with the
file
name and extension changed.

It has arrived with the name ATT418371.ATT - and if you click it is prompts
you as to which application to open the file with.

Does anyone have any idea what may cause the file name and more importantly
file type change at some point between the upload and send. The MAKEUNIQUE
parameter is being used but that shouldn't change the file extension should
it?

The file is being selected using a form input box of type file.

The code doing the upload is as follows:
  <cflock name="FileUploadLock" type="EXCLUSIVE" timeout="30">
    <!--- Need to get the file onto the server to send! --->
    <cffile action="UPLOAD"
            filefield="attachment"
            destination="xxxxxxxxxxxxxx"
            nameconflict="MAKEUNIQUE">

    <!--- Put this value into a variable --->
    <cfset session.Filelocation =
#cffile.serverdirectory#&'\'&#cffile.serverfile#>
  </cflock>

where xxxxxxxxxxx is the path to the attachment directory on the server.

Not sure if this is a CF issue or server/infrastructure issue?
