Generally speaking, you'll probably find that the .att file contains a little bit of info about the removed attachment, not the attachment itself.

Whatever is attached to the receiving mail server is probably just automagically removing any .doc attachments, rather than checking to see if it is infected and passing it onto the recipient.

Perhaps its something to do with the mail header.... Or maybe it is at the senders end, preventing stuff being sent out, so that they can't be held liable, blah blah blah....

OK thanks guys

why would mimesweeper/checkpoint want to change a file extension for
security reasons? are you saying that because it is a .doc it could have
potential for viruses etc?

having said that I can receive word documents from others as attachments OK
:o/

Or MimeSweeper.

Well, its not a standard Checkpoint function, though there may well be a

Sounds suspiciously like an Exchange Server doing some of its delightful

security measures to me, but I could be wrong.

it would be the firewall that is receiving the message. Find out what

that

firewall is to confirm that it does this.

sounds like the Firewall is doing this for very obvious security reasons.

We have an application on the site that allows Police officers in the Met to send out emails to the public.

An officer tried to send an email out last night with a word doc

attachment

but the mail has been distributed to everybody and has arrived with the
file
name and extension changed.

It has arrived with the name ATT418371.ATT - and if you click it is

prompts

you as to which application to open the file with.

Does anyone have any idea what may cause the file name and more

importantly

file type change at some point between the upload and send. The MAKEUNIQUE
parameter is being used but that shouldn't change the file extension

should

it?

The file is being selected using a form input box of type file.

The code doing the upload is as follows:
 <cflock name="FileUploadLock" type="EXCLUSIVE" timeout="30">
   <!--- Need to get the file onto the server to send! --->
   <cffile action="UPLOAD"
           filefield="attachment"
           destination="xxxxxxxxxxxxxx"
           nameconflict="MAKEUNIQUE">

   <!--- Put this value into a variable --->
   <cfset session.Filelocation =
#cffile.serverdirectory#&'\'&#cffile.serverfile#>
 </cflock>

where xxxxxxxxxxx is the path to the attachment directory on the server.

Not sure if this is a CF issue or server/infrastructure issue?
