Also, have you and Simon and Arthur considered submitting a

Not realy. It's been in Europe a few times now. So maybe we should
propose another continent? (Though I'm not sure I'm going to travel
that far, but that shouldn´t play a role.)
I wish we could have it in, say, Toronto, or some place balmy, like
Antigua (it's winter here) but the reality is that the conference is
a unique occasion for developers to meet the Hamburg developers who
are doing most of the core coding. These developers are usually
willing to travel, but the farther you get out from Hamburg, the more
it costs, both in time and money. Last year we had it in Koper and
it was marvellous, albeit a little difficult and costly to get to for
non-Europeans (I always understate, except when I don't). So, the
practical fact is that we are sort of destined to having the big
conference in Europe, unless some generous angel is willing to put up
a lot of money for travel and lodging. If you are going to have it
in Europe, Amsterdam is thus an excellent option, at least for those
of us in North America, and probably for other parts of the world, as
it is relatively cheap to get there, the beer is more than adequate
and flows freely, and people speak English.
What we can have--what I would like--is not really regicons but
target specific developer conferences and see if we can get important
developers to attend. Thus, we can focus on OSCON (Portland, US) and
see if we can get some sunnies out there to do some workshops. Other
key conferences can be designated, such as the Brazilian Fisl 7.0
(which I am hoping to attend), and conferences in Singapore and
elsewhere in Asia, to name but three. Unfortunately, getting
developers to present is not easy, as many are tied to their
corporations and can't take time off. Michael Meeks is presenting on
OOo at Fosdem, which is great, but we do need talented developers
willing to present on OOo at other conferences. I attend a lot of
them, and meet with many developers and help them start work on OOo,
but we really need people who can manage workshops. (I am attending
two conferences in the next month, one in India, the LinuxAsia
conference, and will be discussing organizing the developers there
and helping them get their work in OOo, and the other in Denmark, at
the LinuxForum, where Søren T. and others from the DA project will be
also present.)
So, let's focus on some important conferences where developers can
speak and see about getting OOo developers to present workshops and
things like that there. Marketing is more than distributing the
product; it's about telling people, especially developers, how they
can contribute to the project.
Does this help?
Cheers,
Louis
