You may want to look at the Community Council archives. Last year we
discussed creating a nonprofit for marketing and other activities
(the actual purpose would be to manage money) but little came of it,
though not because of a real lack of interest. I'm reanimating the
issue and we are beginning to discuss it in the CC. I'm sending a new
draft of the proposal to the CC later on today. Some points: this
nonprofit would be located in North America, probably the US. It
would manage money for OOo activities, including marketing.

That's fine, but if there is likely to be any delay, why not just set up a bank account and company limited by guarantee for marketing? It can be
done tomorrow - just have the Lead and Co-lead as the CEO and company
secretary and as signatories to a bank account and get started. When the
main decisions are clear about a foundation there is no reason why the
company can not be dissolved after transferring its assets to the
foundation.

I proposed this ages ago, even suggesting do it simple, like create a club bank account. Some issues came up, along the lines of liability and accountability, and so it died. As DC points out, yes, other projects have done it, though I don't know the particulars (eg, how they are constituted, what sort of company, etc.) We can do it here-- in North America, say--fairly quickly. At the moment, however, Team OOo *is* serving as a recipient of funds for OOo purposes including marketing, so we are not bereft of such services. And, important events can and very likely will get funding.

For the immediate, then, I'd suggest doing what Graham and I just did, and pitch particular events and conferences, highlighting their importance.
