Well, I guess I have an idea.

The UK should set up an independent group funded by all the money they'll save on not buying MS Office licenses, that will promote OpenOffice and other FOSS tools within the government offices and agencies.

It could be like the Open Source Lab at Oregon State University (http://osuosl.org/).

Fund some FOSS projects and be the official organization that supports OOo and "sells" it to all the schools. Then the schools will have a central place to look for support and to be the 'face' of the software in the eyes of end users. The new lab will also be an ideal entity to develop specific features for its constituents as well as contribute back to the core OOo project.

Also, let me say how exciting and wonderful this development could turn out to be! Ian and Daniel, great work! And thank you.

Hello? Hasn't anyone seen this? Does anyone here think that getting OOo in every school desktop in the United Kingdom would be a good idea? We're talking about 2 million desktops used by 7 million pupils who would then grow up learning OOo.

BECTA is the UK agency in charge of IT strategy for UK schools. Ian is the open source contact for BECTA. Ian has been telling BECTA about OOo. BECTA is interested in putting OOo in every school desktop in the UK. Ian writes here asking for input. Get it?

I have just had a meeting with senior people in BECTA and there is
interest in devising ways of getting OOo onto all new PCs sold to
schools. This isn't as straightforward as it might at first sound
because schools buy independently from a vast number of different
suppliers. I have some ideas but if anyone has any of their own let me
know so I can provide some options.
