Web applications have to run within the browser. That's what makes them web
applications, as opposed to desktop applications. But don't worry, an online
OOo won't mean the death of the good old OOo desktop apps. They'll still be
there for those who want better OS integration or more complex features.

Definitely. I'd also be OK with unobtrusive ads. Or, better yet, optional
ads (users could get rid of ads or keep them as a donation to the project; I
think this would be the most polite thing to do, and I'd definitely keep the
ads up). It'd also be nice if ads were dealt with as quality content (so not
the primitive annoying "4 simple steps to lose weight" image banners). Just
look at what Apple is doing with their iAd service.

Geez, I hope they choose to make it open-source. I mean, there's no real
open-source online office suite available yet. (Sure, there's Feng Office,
but that's not compatible with Microsoft's formats or ODF, so it doesn't
really count. There's also EtherPad, a word processor, which does have nice
export options, including DOC and ODT, but its development has
ended.) Otherwise, I'm sticking with Google Docs.

I have to disagree with you there. There's rarely a case in which ignoring
the opinions of the community is going to be helpful to your business --
going against your customers is never good. Especially if the software is
free and open-source. Oracle has done a great job with OpenOffice.org and
VirtualBox, and I trust it. And even if Oracle started to abuse its grip on
its software somehow, anyone could take the code and make his own, unabusive
branch. That's one of the perks of open-source.

But who do you know with enough programming skills to be able to take on
such a heavy project?

No, I'm glad that you put both the versions in. It's not a bother at all. :)
