In order to verify your statement, I have just extracted
apache-maven-2.2.1-bin.zip on a Linux system. Result: x-bits are not
set on the mvn executable.
In fairness, we've had a TON of problems with the assembly plugin and
file attributes like the executable bit. You might want to verify with
another data point before we reach any sort of definitive conclusion.
If zip formats unpack with file attributes preserved, I'm +1 to the
single format...I tend to use tar.bz2 simply because it's smaller to
shuffle around from machine to machine. But I'm not stuck on that
format, either.
