I personally think that not having a tar.gz will be very "unnatural" for unix folks and will cause a barrage of "where's the unix build?" emails to users@ and such.
To me, there is no downside of having it. It takes an extra couple seconds to build and upload. Who cares? But the potential for annoying unix "purists" that won't touch that "windows stuff", would be a downside of not having it. That, and pretty much none of my older Solaris and AIX boxes have unzip. :-) My $0.02.
