That was how it was explained in mercantile law. The specific example was with Anglo American, deBeeers Consolidated, their holding companies, and their shell companies.
OED definitions and legal defintions need not be congruent.
Well, *that* is certainly true. Lawyers do have a language of their own, not to be confused with the language of the people. :-)
