Great for INGOTs. But please remember, that we are targeting hunderts if not thousands of contributors. It's ok to raise the problms of the OOo-environment and suggest better soultions.

I'm glad you think so. Subversion is the most "proven" alternative to CVS, and the most similar. I'm a fan of Darcs, but Subversion would likely be a better fit for OOo.

As for the number of contributors, *all* of the alternatives I listed would be *better* for handling many contributors. After all, one of the problems of CVS is the difficulty in branching and merging again, which tends to limit the number of contributors. This is why the only people who merge braches are the developers in Hamburg.

I certainly would like to get rid of CVS as soon as possible. It's just not that easy. For example I tried to import the whole CVS repository (it's just a meager 14 GBytes) into subversion. After 5 days of running I now have half of the 409000 revisions imported. So that's an estimated 10 days for just importing the data. 10 days when no one can commit a thing. Even with the best preparation (all the CWS stuff ported to subversion etc) I think we would need at least 14 days for a conversion. I know a few people who wouldn't find that acceptable. The preparations will take at least 3 man month, so it's not cost free either.

OOo is huge. Changing course with such an essential thing as the SCM used will take very careful planing and the coordination of many people involved (the community, Collab.Net, Sun Hamburg, Novell, Redhat etc). It can be done, but it must be very clear that effort is worth the cost.

I've checked out all the other ones. None seems to be suitable for OOo, leaving subversion as the only reasonable alternative to CVS.

And please .. as long as you don't have the perfect solution that would fit to all peoples needs

I do: Subversion

stop using words like "sucks". That's rather "trollish" behaviour and
in no way helpfull for our community.

Saying CVS sucks is a very mild thing, to say. It's not intended as trolling. OOo developers also say that CVS sucks. CVS developers say that CVS sucks (that's why they made Subversion). It's a known fact.

Cheers,
Daniel.
