Here you are. This is a status update for the Italian Native-Lang
project (PLIO) in the period September-December 2006.

1: New lead

Riccardo Losselli stepped down from his role as Italian NL project lead
and the Italian OOo community elected Andrea Pescetti in his place. The
"it" project thus has two leads now, i.e., Davide Dozza and Andrea
Pescetti.

2: Localized OOo version

Back in October, the Italian NL project ran full QA tests on both the
2.0.4-SUN builds and the 2.0.4-PLIO packages and approved both. The PLIO
packages consisted in the SUN binaries with Italian dictionaries added
(they did not differ in anything else from SUN binaries: only packaging
had been affected, since we performed only a repackaging).

The PLIO version, distributed through SourceForge, was a huge success,
with 303,000 downloads in 59 days and a general user satisfaction; we
wish we could compare these figures to the 2.0.4-SUN downloads, but we
don't know where to find them.

For version 2.1 we only approved the SUN builds (for Windows, Linux and
MacOSX) and we are considering to distribute our extension as, guess
what, an extension.

We are using Bouncer for OOo 2.1 downloads from the Italian web site and
we hope that it will be possible to have download statistics, which are
very useful to our marketing project.

3: Documentation

Several volunteers coordinated by Alessandro Cattelan translated the
"Getting Started Guide" into Italian. The work is undergoing the final
revision and we expect it to be available in a few weeks.

A methodology, which involves common translation memories, is under
development. Thanks to common approaches and guidelines for all document
translations, we expect an increase of quality from such methodology.

4: Web site reorganization

Francesca Beatrice Cice and Andrea Sanavia revamped our web site; it now
features a better structure and up-to-date news. The redesign is not yet
complete.

5: Lobbying activity

Davide Dozza contributed to a regional law proposal promoting open
standards and open source solutions in Friuli-Venezia Giulia,
North-Eastern Italy.

Both Davide Dozza and Andrea Pescetti participate in "Politica del
Software", a working group aiming at promotion of open formats and open
source software for the public administration.

Many other ODF/OOo lobbying activities on public institutions are in the
pipe.

6: Marketing and Media Coverage

Italo Vignoli sent out press releases on a regular basis. Besides a wide
coverage on Internet news and technology web sites, we were featured in
a national TV program (RaiTre) and in two major national newspapers (Il
Sole 24 Ore, Repubblica).

Moreover, we joined the Italian Linux Day 2006 by developing a unified
OOo presentation that was used in several cities.

7: Association

An Italian association is coming to life, as the Italian NL community is
going to constitute itself as a formal association in Italy. We spent
the last six months to establish it and we expect to launch it at the
beginning of 2007.

Davide Dozza - Andrea Pescetti
Italian NL Project Leads.
