Note that it's not about Apache NetBeans as an IDE only, at all. It's about
Apache NetBeans as a development platform, e.g., take a look at these:

I'm well aware of that, and I don't doubt we could fill all
sessions...but it's not me you have to win over :-). The vast majority
of devrooms are always related to broader topics. There isn't a Jenkins
room, it's a "CI devroom", no "cloudstack" room (containers/cloud etc),
there's no mySQL-only or mariadb room, it's "relational databases" and
so on. The FOSDEM team values broader yet cohesive topics that allow for
"competition of minds", and I think it could very well be considered too
narrow to just have a devroom about one specific ecosystem.
So to reiterate, I'm personally fully supportive, but I think the
chances of getting a devroom would be substantially greater if the topic
is a bit more encompassing. Just my €0.02 :)

Daniel.

Hi,
I wonder if we'd like to propose a devroom about Apache NetBeans on FOSDEM
2019.
For more information on the devrooms, please see:
https://submission.fosdem.org/devroom.php
We would need:
-be positive we would have 8 hours of content (or 4, if we would ask just
for a half-day). I myself might be able to talk about Java stuff, and I am
sure others have some interesting stuff to talk about too.
-send a proposal (see below)
-have some volunteers to take care about the room and camera (please see
the link above for more info).
-have a primary (submitter) and secondary contact.
So, any opinion on this? The deadline for the proposal is 20 September.
I'm +1 on the idea, but I don't think the proposal would be readily
accepted, as it's specific to only NetBeans. Generally, FOSDEM is looking
for broader topics or genres, so perhaps an IDE devroom would stand a
better chance? You could still, of course, have NetBeans content, but due
to shortage on space (which there really is these days), the odds of
getting a dev room for just one program is slim, so I'd pool it with other
IDE topics to make it more feasible.
With regards,
Daniel.
So far, I made this crude sketch for the proposal:
----
Title of devroom:
-----------------
Apache NetBeans
Elaborate description of proposed devroom (including possible topics):
----------------------------------------------------------------------
In this room, we will discuss the current state and the future of Apache
NetBeans, and related topics. Possible topics include:
-new Java features and their support in Apache NetBeans
...
Why does it fit FOSDEM?
-----------------------
Apache NetBeans is an open source IDE, and its this dev room would be an
opportunity for the developers to meet, discuss the current state and
future, and also help other to understand the state of the project.
Relevant URLs:
--------------
https://netbeans.apache.org/
Special requirements:
---------------------
If possible, please don't schedule concurrently with major Java-related
events.
---
If we would like to submit this proposal, I'll put this into a wiki, so
that we can all edit that.
Thanks,
Jan
