Hello Olaf,

I don't know who first came up with the "File" menu. Its been around since
at least 1984, with the introduction of the Apple Macintosh. Since then,
most applications have had "File" as their left-most menu. It hasn't always
made sense to me either. I believe the menu "File" may have originally
represented the act of filing, as in "to file a memo in a filing cabinet",
rather than the common use of the term among computer people, a "file" as
named stream of data, usually stored on disk in a hierarchical directory.
