For me the biggest problem with this approach is that OOo supports quite a lot of file types with a lot of different extensions. It can be confusing to show "*.*" (you can't show all supported extensions here) but display only some of the files. Perhaps the problem can be solved by providing a better error message. Something like "OOo does not support this file type. Please try to open the file from your desktop" or something else.
