and if you have, how much of a problem is it for you? Would a

I'm a regular iCal user, and I have not noticed it, even though I
typically quit and restart the app multiple times a day. The reason
is that the things that are important to me are: reminders, my
schedule (usually just for the next day or two), and my next actions.
None of these requires tracking the selected event/task in the app.
Also, updating my calendar typically takes 30 seconds or less, so I
don't have to deal with switching context much, which is something
preserving selection helps with.
In the case of an email client, I would be pretty upset with losing
the state of open composition windows, for example, because often
there the tasks (like composing a reply to an email) persist between
quit & restart.
