We have a very high profile and ongoing dispute with another vendor on
similar matters. If nothing else, it should show that we are very
serious about such things. In the extreme case, it could very well
mean that we yank some portions of specific products or even entire
projects.

I'm not sure what you are referring to. Is it Sun Java / Harmony ?

While I was referring to that, I would like to discourage us going off
into a tangent exploring the various ways in which the two cases are
similar or different. My only point is that we are serious, and we
will not agree to terms that require our users to obtain additional
licenses in order to use our Work.

No doubt that we are serious, I just wanted to make sure I understood. No comparisons needed.

I can also point at sender-id
where we took a similar stance with sender-id:

http://www.apache.org/foundation/docs/sender-id-position.html

Now it *IS* worth noting that "Sender ID" is part of OSP. So the comparison with this email, the OSP and POI may be worthwhile discussing:

http://www.microsoft.com/interop/osp/default.mspx

Security

RFC 4406 - Sender ID: Authenticating E-Mail
RFC 4408 - Sender Policy Framework: Authorizing Use of Domains in “Mail From”
RFC 4407 - Purported Responsible Address in E-Mail Messages
RFC 4405 - SMTP Service Extension for Indicating the Responsible Submitter of an E-Mail Message

I tried to look to see what SpamAssasin and JAMES projects have to say about SenderID and OSP. Has the position changed regarding the ASF sender-id-position letter. Does OSP help there?

If so, then why shouldn't these:

Office XML File Formats

Office 2003 XML Reference Schemas
Office Open XML 1.0 – Ecma-376

Office Binary File Formats for Word, Excel and PowerPoint

Word 97-2007 Binary File Format (.doc) Specification
PowerPoint 97-2007 Binary File Format (.ppt) Specification
Excel 97-2007 Binary File Format (.xls) Specification
Excel 2007 Binary File Format (.xlsb) Specification
Office Drawing 97-2007 Binary Format Specification

Windows Compound Formats

Windows Compound Binary File Format Specification

Graphics Formats

Windows Metafile Format (.wmf) Specification
Ink Serialized Format (ISF) Specification
Xaml Object Mapping Specification 2006 (Draft v0.1)
WPF Xaml Vocabulary Specification 2006 (Draft v0.1)

Be sufficient for POI?

Sam, what do you think?

Can you say what you do for IBM?

I work in the Emerging Technologies group, and specialize in matters
relating to the ASF and certain standards including HTML5 and Atom.
Previously I focused on Web Services (I have since reformed), C#, CLI,
and before that ECMAScript (a.k.a. JavaScript).

Atom looks very cool to me, we've been playing with Apache Roller. This part gets off-topic.

Regards,
Dave
