AFAIK some mail sites that took the do-not-care approach you suggest got 
classified as (redirecting) spambots which caused all kinds of trouble.

I don't think we should neglect the threat especially when some of the spam 
attachments are infected. Most browsers nowadays have some sort of 
malware/phishing/spam prevention and we should try to avoid to getting on their 
blacklists.
