Hello,
I hope I have found the correct list to do so.
You know about Issue Tracker, don't you?
Yes, I do. I wrote several bug reports, but after my bug report discussing
some of these topics was declared a *duplicate* of 7500 which I found
unacceptible, I started a QA discussion which ended with the suggestion of
the German QA lead to discuss this here to get things going, possibly
start the creation of a specification paper etc.
Now, here we are. The QA discussion has also raised some more problems,
which I included in my posting here, this time.
26. Select melted cell B2-C2
27. Use Edit - Paste Special
with deselected "Paste All" and "Formats" and
all other entries in fields "Selection" selected
-> raises error "Cell merge not possible if cells already merged"
This is bug #1, as it should NOT copy any format as we have
learned in step 21, so there can be no clash.
See issue 7500.
Sorry, but issue 7500 is classified as *enhancement* and most of what I
have reported including the above are clearly *defects* for which I stated
the proof in my mail.
The above situation deals with copying without Formats; melting properties
clearly belong to the formats, so they should not be copied, hence not
cause any clashes. This is easy to comprehend logic - if you don't agree
with me, please let me know your arguments.
Furthermore issue 7500 is being ignored for 4 years (!) now.
30. Select Sheet 2
Looks related to issue 65964, I'll take a look at this. Thanks for pointing
it out.
Ok.
Furthermore, now cell C2 can no longer be select neither
with cursor nor with mouse! The document got corrupted.
Note that the "corrupted document" isn't that much of a problem - saving
and reloading rectifies it, as does unmerging the cells before the
affected area.
Thanks for the info that the corruption isn't permanent, but you cannot
expect a user to close and reopen his document just to continue work. This
is like the dreaded bug where chapter numbers did not display correctly in
Writer until reopening the document back in OOo 2.0.0 which badly hit
OOo's reputation.
This needs to be fixed.
While it is clear, that the 'melted format' sometimes cannot be copied
due to clashes with surrounding melted cells, OOo should automatically
switch to copy just cell contents when a clash is detected. This would
help to overcome most problems in this area.
Silently doing something else because the user-selected action isn't
possible doesn't seem like a good idea. The check for merged cells could
be modified to ignore those cells that would be overwritten when
pasting, but that doesn't have much priority.
Well, you could also raise a dialog box like in the case where one of the
rightmost cells of an area you want to melt contains a number and you are
asked whether you prefer to copy it to the leftmost cell or hide it.
Personally, I would be happy, if at least the "Copy-Paste Special" bug
could be fixed as soon as possible.
From a developers point of view is this really such a big deal to fix the
checks that it can't be done in a short timeframe?
Regards,
Guido
