Well, yes and no.  It's good to be flexible, but horrible for people trying to
parse your output.

"legal" isn't really meaningful, there isn't a real definition for what goes
in the Received header.  2822 specifies, essentially:

([a-z]+(-[a-z0-9]+)* \S+\s*)+ ; (some date regex)

(aka: "item-name item-value")

with no definition of what item-name or item-value mean.  I mean heck,
comments are used to give information (IP, etc,) in unspecified formats!

The only real thing I can find is in 821, there's a BNF for "time-stamp-line",
which goes into the different things you can find in a Received line, but
since that was replaced with the item-name item-value bit ...


I don't think there's anything but a kluge that we can do for 3.0.x for these
headers.  Exim's flexibility is nice, but presents a large challenge in
relation to the other MTAs that standardized their formats, relatively.

For 3.1 we can probably simplify out a lot of stuff doing the
item-name/item-value parsing -- with some figuring for the comment/IP value
information.
