We all agree that Evolution is invoking spamc wrong. That's not the issue here and we can take that up with Evolution's devs. The issue here is that that would have been far more evident had spamc's error control governing its interface been more robust and emit a more meaningful error message where, as you say, a daemonized application ought. It is treating an empty "" parameter to -U as an actual path to a socket file.
