What I have done is, reverted my version of ICU to the standard version
that comes with OOo. With this, I took the cursortest1.odt, and saved
it in the Anjali font, and took screenshots. All three I have uploaded
as attachments with the issue. If you need more info to figure out the
bug, then please do tell me.
thank you. Now we are both using the same font and the same Writer. I
confirmed the issue and added a new bugdoc that shows the problem in
detail. Please have a look.
I have discovered something very interesting (in my view):

In the cursortest_anjali2.odt, select all the text and remove italic.

Then, in the version 2 string, delete the space between the 2 Malayalam
sequences, and the layout becomes OK (i.e., the 2 sequences render
properly).

Now, undo and let the space come back (shows wrong layout as mentioned in
the bug report). Now, select *only* the space and apply italic. The layout
becomes OK again.

Perhaps the reason this happens is that the space is now formatted as a
separate layout run ?
I tried doing this in the original cursortest_anjali.odt that I had initially attached, and I can confirm that setting the spaces to italic leads to correct layout.

If you have attribute changes, you have different text portions and the string will be painted not as one string, but according to the portion layout. As we already know, the portion layout is fine (see the cursor travelling), therefore I'm not surprised about this effect. I'll already informed HDU about this issue, we is the expert for all this vcl related stuff.

Frank
