I have discovered something very interesting (in my view):

In the cursortest_anjali2.odt, select all the text and remove italic.

Then, in the version 2 string, delete the space between the 2 Malayalam 
sequences, and the layout becomes OK (i.e., the 2 sequences render properly).

Now, undo and let the space come back (shows wrong layout as mentioned in the 
bug report). Now, select *only* the space and apply italic. The layout 
becomes OK again.

Perhaps the reason this happens is that the space is now formatted as a 
separate layout run ?
