   I really like that idea. Switching between rendered and non-rendered version 
by clicking on it (or generally by focusing the field) is **great** - because 
it naturally fits the user intuitive flow. Loosing the focus of the field would 
turn it into a rendered version.
   
   What I might add to it - while you are in edit mode, you could add hovers 
showing the value of those placeholders - something similar to what IntelliJ 
does to Python code - when you have - for example positional named parameters  
- showing the name straight in the editor.

   That would be a bit complex-ish to implement (especially all the transitions 
when you attempt to modify placeholder itself, and it would be great to have 
autocomplete for those placeholders ideally) - but I would see that as a 
"great" UI.
