didn't reproduce this issue I believe because the test was done with descriptor
src/main/descriptors/tutorial/ex1/RoomNumberAnnotator.xml
instead of the one given in the tutorial,
<UIMA_HOME>/examples/descriptors/analysis_engine/UIMA_Analysis_Example.xml
