Flags are not practical in this context. As other mention they refer to countries and not languages and thus there is often a lot of politics and / or bad feelings. e.g How would English be represented, with the Cross of St George? Certainly not the Union Jack as that covers gaelic, welsh and one or two more. The most populous English speaking land (and largest democracy) would be India. etc. Turkish? Kurdish? Ojibwe?


Or maybe better : strings representing the relevant language in it's own
language

This sounds more useful, especially for people that stumble accross the page and cannot read it, but still would like to find the link for their own language.
