I have a very simple proposal for the website team:
1) Let's change the website NOW. Let's have a vote, and pick
a page.
2) As soon as that's done, put up a survey to gather additional
information. This is the survey I recommend:
* Why are you visiting our site today?
* Did you find what you were looking for?
If we agree to do *this* I promise not to argue over which site I like
better and just let everyone else pick. This is why I think we should do
the steps above:
a) Why have the survey after the page is up?
---------------------------------------------
The current page has a lot of problems. Many of them are obvious and very
conspicuous. Others are harder to see. All of the current proposals
address the most evident problems. They are *all* improvements.
If we put any of them up first, we will be starting from a higher point.
We'll be in a better position to take a solid next step.
b) Why use only those two questions?
------------------------------------
The questionaire is very short and simple. The first question can be
answered as soon as you visit the page. The next one just a moment after.
This kind of questionaire is recommended by Jakob Nielsen:
Title: First Rule of Usability? Don't Listen to Users

This survey also puts the emphasis on the user's motivation for comming to
the site. And also tells us if we are meeting that particular need.
After we've solved the problems illustrated by this initial survey, we can
consider having another survey for fine-tunning.
Cheers,
