Welcome and Hi!

Hi!
I am a web designer and I would like to help with the OpenOffice.org website.
I have been using OpenOffice.org for some time and I have been observing the development taking place before the upcoming 2.0 release.

I have been looking through the list archives for information about the site redesign to accompany the 2.0 release and I found this:

"It's here: <http://www.openoffice.org/styles/>. It's very rudimentary,
mainly specifies the colors for tables and tries to provide hints. But
I'd love to move to entirely <div> tags, CSS, and have clear
explanations on how to do things efficiently. If you want to try your
hand at it: please!"

I really think I could help with this: I would certainly like to help with a redesign and a conversion to a div/span/CSS type layout rather than a table layout, and I could help with updating the style guide.

I'll try to address all this in some coherent fashion but some of what I say will probably be confusing anyway.

There are several issues/factors regarding actual site design on OOo--one of which is the style sheet document you've found, and the other of which is the way SourceCast, our current hosting architecture, does things. The two are somewhat related, and yet, can be separated up to a point. How's that for clarity? :}

This is not a nice simple answer, but it's the best I can do for the moment. I've co-lead on the website project, and have been throw at least one major overhaul of the site involving both these elements, so I can tell you things are somewhat complicated to say the least.

We can chat more about some of this at some later point. For answers to your other immediate concerns...

So, before I rush into the design and development, I would like to ask a few questions:
* What resources are there at the moment for the redesign?

I'm not even sure what you mean by "resources". For about the past month, some of us have been involved in a slight overhaul of the home page (HP) and a few other pages. If you'd like to see what's be done in this regard, go to:

https://www.sc40.sfo.collab.net/

a very fine fellow named Maarten has been working on this with collaboration from some others for a bit now.

* How can I get my contributions included (on www.openoffice.org)?
Typically, this is accomplished either by setting up your own internal site and letting us take a look, or submitting a design via the "Documents & files" link on website.openoffice.org once you've logged into the project (these require approval to be posted), or cvs access to the "tryouts" area on website, which is more involved.

* What do I do next (after announcing my presence)?

Well you can take a list at our current To-Dos for the site...a link on the current Home Page, to see what needs to be done.

Thank you, and I hope I can be of help.

Great and welcome! I'm sure you'll have many more questions at some point but hopefully this will get you started.
