Sorry to do this, but I'll point this out now in case it's useful:

I thought now might be a good time to jump into the discussion and address a few things that have been brought up regarding our design proposal for the new OOo website.

This proposal incorporates elements from both the current and new OOo site designs, and draws on our experience from designing the PostgreSQL website. The community feel of the OOo project has been balanced with a professional look to appeal to site visitors; a professional image is paramount in getting new users to download the product.

The design also reinforces the OOo branding, using color and artwork to provide a consistent look between the website and the product. Usability is a priority; for example, all important elements on the homepage are visible without scrolling.

Many good points have been raised on the list with regards to potential issues with our design. The majority of these issues are ones we've already dealt with in designing the PostgreSQL website (e.g. providing a larger font option, ensuring good color contrast, keeping image file sizes low, and considering different screen resolutions). We are confident of resolving these issues with implementation of our design.

While we're happy to take suggestions on the design, I would anticipate making only small, incremental changes to the design we've proposed (I realize there are a couple of minor elements that need to be added).

If the OOo project wishes to use our design for the new website, we will provide the complete, coded design (with valid XHTML/CSS). We provided the same for the PostgreSQL project - once the design was transformed into XHTML/CSS, it took one hour to change from the old design to the new one.

Regards,
Emily Boyd
