Hi,
Yes! One of THE major reasons for the current redesign was the desire to focus on "newbies". I think the current design, given it's friendly and clear look, accomplishes this very well.Last time I saw it, the "current" design was pretty, but not very usable. It required a lot of scrolling, and a lot of valuable ifnormation (e.g. resources for getting help) was severely lacking.
The space issue will be addressed.
To address this issue Jacqueline introduced the idea here of a 'New to OOo'-button, maybe not yet properly designed, this has been incorporated in the new design to help out. Furthermore there has always been the support item in the menubar. The concept of the three buttons is better than anything I've seen here, and that is from a usability point of view. With these buttons specific target groups can be directed to special pages to address /their/ needs. This will of course start with 'what we think is what they need'... but the concept of these new pages is really improving usability a lot.
As we've seen, no design can be incorporated promptly. This is due to scourcecast, the fact that we already have a lot of pages to deal with which should fit, and furthermore probably also due to the OOo decision making system. No, we can't and we shouldn't attempt this. It comes down to how many "new" designs should we accomodate and what period of time. This is insanity!Emily's design can be incorporated promptly, and it's much superior to anything we've seen.
If you've cared so much about the development, why haven't you joined up the sc40-list? A lot of content choices have been discussed over there. Most of the discussion at the PL-list was about which content they favoured and cared about and which content not...Maarten--you are right on! The design we have is what was agreed on by the *overall* project at a given point in time,Only because you moved the vote to a group of people who had not been involved in the discussion, and who are not web designers. Because the people who *were* in the website list and who do have experience did *not* agree on that design.
g.,
Maarten
