Hi
As prior discussions suggested.... I removed the cdrom/bittorrent
link from homepage. I too had seen it as a little confusing but
then I also wanted people to use BitTorrents. However, we need now
to update the Download page.
Would it be possible to use the same code as for the other
button's, this should make the button look nice again (in style
with the other buttons) :) (yes I'm nitpicking)
Fine with me. Why don't you post a sample? eg, index-murb[date].html
in www?
<a class="button" id="buttondownload" name="buttondownload"
href="http://download.openoffice.org/2.0.1/
index.html"><span>Download<br/>OpenOffice.org 2.0.1</span></a>
I see.
I think the only limit should be: make it look good and make it
user- & server-efficient :-)
Let's say finish this by second week of January?
I'm short on time lately, but I can free some time in the first few
weeks of January if no-one else is applying.
Kay indicated some interest, but perhaps you can coordinate with her?
I would btw think of that as one of a set of other possible
upgrades the download page might need. Maybe we could address them
all in one? [Do I hear some of you thinking "no not him again!"? :D]
not at all! ;-)
I think the DL page should be made better overall....
One issue I still have with the download page is its lack of true
support for the native language editions.
Yes.
The thinking I had about it:
Javascripting also the server addresses of the native language
versions is a nogo, since it's too complex to keep it up to date
with all local versions, which are not updated at the same time,
and not available on all servers the english version is available on.
Since we lack serverside scripting capabilities to address this (or
the knowledge): to make it as fluently as possible all native
languages need to create their own download page similar to the one
deployed on download.openoffice.org, in a way that the end user
will only notice the slight address change and language change (the
www would become the particular language code), but with similar
markup as the download page, and without the message in between
telling the user is already starting download (which only applies
to the english users). This would however not address the dropdown
problem, which is no longer a problem with the second option.
This is feasible. We use now a template that is utilised by a
portion, not all, of the NLC projects. We can try to encourage others
to use a new template, with the inducement being that it is easier on
users. But look at some of the more outré pages in the NLC category.
Another option would be removing the drop down for the native
language, since it implies the not what is happening at the moment.
The set of dropdowns tell me I'm allowed to change operating system
settings and then change language settings, while setting the
operating turns out to be useless when changing from the default
language. Maybe a better option would be just have a big box saying
download OpenOffice.org in your local language. This would be
simple to implement, and could well be part of the intended update
in january (though it might need more discussion, which consumes
often most of the time :s)
Can you draft an example? Perhaps use the test area of website?
Another slight improvement of the download page could be greying
out the other options (besides the language selector), as e.g. done
on the bittorrent download page, untill a language selection is
being made, but this could create some problems with the english
users...
Maybe updating more than one thing would take too long (as all
changes need discussion), but it saves effort in the somewhat
longer run.
Well, have fun. :-)
I for one am open to all suggestions, as long as it improves things.
Best,
Louis
