Hi Martin,
download.openoffice.org already contains links to snapshots/releases
so I would not invent another place for that.
So what you simply want is make the link to
http://download.openoffice.org/680/index.html more prominent at
http://download.openoffice.org/ ? Possibly something more like a banner
stating "OpenOffice.org 2.2 is near completion. Help us testing it.
Download RC3." ?
Since there are every now and then debates about what should and should
not be at the main page, I was just elaborating on what this request
would mean to the main page... but well... you didn't consider it at all :)
The download.openoffice.org pages could feature a direct link to the
2.2RC pages through some differently marked up link, but not as big
in size as the normal download box.
I have some more questions regarding the download page:
* There are separate buttons for Linux x86 and Linux PPC, but for
Solaris builds we just have one button with two links in it.
If Linux PPC would have had the same kind of QA, Linux would also
have x86 and PPC below it. We wanted to make a clear distinction
between those versions that are QA'd (which we described as "Our
thoroughly tested builds") and those which are not.
Then "other versions" is not that clear as it should be.
Any suggestions? We have not debated every word on every page, so...
something like "use it or your own risk builds" or "less tested builds"
would be preferred by you?
* It doesn't seem possible any more to download installation sets
with jre integrated. Even worse, there is a link below to how to
install Java separately with no hint to installation set with jre
integrated.
[javascript solution to integrate it within current download page
described here]
I would prefer the default jre download with an checkbox to unselect
the jre.
Ok, I don't have much time... so please don't expect this change to
happen immediately. If others volunteer...
* For the Windows platform, the sequence maybe should better be
sorted from newest to oldest Windows versions and maybe we should
reduce the List to the most important/known: Vista, XP, 98 (adding
NT, 2000, 2003 is making the list quite long ?)
[...]
yes, with 2.2 we will be on the very safe side but I think it's
important to list it there.
Hmmm... some alternatives fro writing it:
The current one (it should not exceed the current length):
"Windows 2000, NT & XP"
Alternatives I could come up with:
"98, XP, Vista"
"98, NT, 2k, XP, Vista"
"98, NT, 2000, XP, Vista"
"98, NT, 2000, XP, Vista"
"Vista, XP, 98"
"Vista, XP,..., 98"
"Vista, XP, 2000, NT, 98"
"Vista, XP, 2k, NT, 98"
"All versions (>98)"
"All recent versions (>98)"
"All popular versions (>98)"
I had not the impression that there are two sides of the story, I just
wanted to make sure that all needs developers and users have are
getting resolved.
Well, your e-mail seemed to be more written from a developers/QA
perspective, especially since I read your first e-mail as a request for
putting another button on the main page... which is always tricky... and
that would thus be a conflict between more dev vs. end-user ... a
typical discussion here. But I think it is clear now :)
g.,
Maarten
