Hi Louis,
I would rather skip the contribution page, though, OR, and that is
imho the biggest problem, make sure downloads start automatically. I
think the contribution page is the biggest issue at the moment.
Followed by the fact that we do not promote downloads that much, thus
force people to think about how they need to proceed (euh... P2P,
CDRom, aaah, download, <click>)
By contribution page I mean the page that comes up after one clicks on
downloading OOo but before the downloading commences.
I know.
RESOLUTION: Open download by default and remove contribution page
(cost: none, just remove the javascript)
I guess I'm not persuaded by the resolution. But I do want automatic
downloads, if it comes down to it.
Well, the resolution was kind of what can we do now to improve the
situation. A one click download should be possible. I like the model of
Firefox for this. Clear download button with an automatically generated
default for OS and language, and below it, in smaller print "Alternative
versions and means to get OpenOffice.org" (or something along these lines).
Costs: somebody needs to do the javascript needed for this. If we focus
on only OS, this is very easy. With different languages it gets
trickier. Why? Since not all languages are finishing their QA process at
the same time, where do we want to refer to in case the latest version
is not available in that language?
For practical reasons, I'd think going for OS selection only now,
integrating language selection complicates much, and might even require
a different release cycle for the OOo product.
In the meantime we can make the process already simpler by removing the
javascript that makes the download box smaller (code that was introduced
to give a fair choice between download, cd-roms and p2p).
The contribution page just after the download click is confusing imho
since it requires yet another button to click... I would vote thus
either for removing this page entirely, or ... while you are waiting for
the download to commence, please consider contributing to OpenOffice.org...
Btw. can you be sure that most people are contributing money from the
contributing page that is shown just after the download page?
I think the homepage (www) should be mainly a marketing page (a). We
need to sell OOo here.
agreed; but also inform.
Well marketing/sell/inform/convincing ... to me it is a bit the same...
since I don't think that with inform you mean you want to create an fair
and balanced review of our office suite compared to that of others, and
then let them decide ;) ... no, we want to persuade them to download OOo
with good arguments ;) ... yet I know that selling does have negative
connotations as well.
nothing happens :-) Just more of this fiddle-faddle.
:) We'll do our best :)
g.,
Maarten
