Separating the work into smaller parts would be nice.
Let's discuss something more important first :)

*How to handle those Algorithm, Certificate, etc. exceptions in X509Auth class?*

Currently we return null and take null as a signal of failure. Can we throw the 
exceptions up as [~rakeshr] suggested? I have such concerns before. But we 
resolved it via a smaller scope (taking null result as a failure). Time to 
revisit.
