I think that you are about to miss an important opportunity here.
Since you are willing to maintain the package, why not do it within
the distribution? This would give you access to the infrastructure and
the people that can help you with problems down the road. Since you
are forced to use tools that employ old bits of software, it is more
than likely that sooner or later you'll be faced with another
deprecation. When that happens, as a package maintainer you will be in
a better position to do something about it, either by adopting a
package that is going to be retired or by becoming a co-maintainer,
plus you can test your own packages.
