I think that you are about to miss an important opportunity here. Since you are willing to maintain the package, why not do it within the distribution? This would give you access to the infrastructure and the people that can help you with problems down the road. Since you are forced to use tools that employ old bits of software, it is more than likely that sooner or later you'll be faced with another deprecation.
