Which patch did you try? Some are programmed not to react to audio at
all. What audio source did you connect and how?
If there is some soldering or other manufacturing related problem that
slipped through our testing and causes your audio input to malfunction,
we would replace or repair the board.

We indeed have rather high noise levels on the audio output of the
board, but since the audio output is little more than a easter egg
feature for hackers, we did not give a lot of priority to it so far.
The amount of noise seems to vary depending on what device is connected
to the output - sometimes it is very noticeable, and sometimes barely.
For example, connecting headphones to the line output (which it is not
designed for) drowns the signal in noise and distortion.

Since the ML401 board that uses the LM4550B codec exhibits significant
noise on the outputs as well (at least on my board), I suspect the codec
chip may have something to do with that. I have just requested samples
of WM9707, we'll see if it improves things (it should be an easy PCB
rework btw).

BTW, Adam, do you have other AC97 codec chips you could recommend?

Best regards,
Sébastien
