You have the choice. If you don't like the image conversion
implementaion you can easily plug in your own (and we offer two), same with
email (we offer none in core iirc), and database (we offer a bunch).

And the release manager can still define what will be the standard in
the database. I don't really understand your point. None of the code
which your mentioned is obligatory; even though it is in mmbase.jar, you
can choose to not use it.
